Dentures Can Restore Function and Appearance
Dr. David Redford offers custom complete and partial dentures at his Denver office, helping patients restore function and beauty to their smiles. Complete dentures replace an entire row of teeth, while partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth among healthy natural teeth. Dentures have come a long way from those used in years past. New materials and manufacturing techniques have tremendously improved comfort and appearance. Both complete and partial dentures are designed individually for each patient to provide a realistic look and comfortable feel. Depending on your unique restorative needs, Dr. Redford may recommend:
- Complete dentures: Complete dentures can be either traditional removable (held in place with a combination of suction and a mild adhesive) or implant-supported (attached to dental implants). A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically implanted in the jaw to replace a lost tooth root. Implants are restored with dentures, crowns, or bridges.
- Partial dentures: Partial dentures attach to the remaining teeth or to implants. Like complete dentures, they are built on an acrylic base that blends in with your gums for a seamless appearance.
Traditional dentures are designed to achieve a precise fit, but could still slip while chewing or speaking. Implant-supported dentures, on the other hand, allow you to bite into crisp apples and deliver lengthy speeches without having to worry that they will shift.
What to Expect
Your new dentures will take about three to six weeks to complete. We will make a series of impressions of your jaw and measure how your upper and lower jaws relate to one another in terms of alignment and spacing. A model is then made with wax forms and plastic patterns molded to the exact shape of your new dentures. Throughout the process, you will try on the model so that it can be evaluated for comfort and appearance before the final dentures are made. After your dentures are created, Dr. Redford can make small adjustments to achieve an optimal fit. It can take some time to acclimate to speaking and eating with your new dentures.
Benefits of Dentures
Dentures benefit your appearance by restoring form and function. If all of your teeth are missing, your lower facial muscles will sag without the underlying structure. Full dentures will return the form to your face for a more youthful, natural appearance. Partial dentures will eliminate visible gaps in your teeth and prevent surrounding teeth from shifting. Dentures can also help you enunciate properly. Once you get used to your new dentures, you can return to eating the foods you enjoy.
